Location Grant for Physician and Grant for Specialists in Designated Fields

The objective of this program is to provide a location grant for newly recruited family physicians and specialists in designated fields.
Location grants offers are conditional to the reception of an employment offer from one of the Regional Health Authority. Eligible Physicians will be required to sign a two year return-of-service agreement and commit to establishing a full time practice within 6 months of receiving the location grant.
- Family physicians who establish a full time community based practice may be eligible for a $20,000 location grant.
- Family physicians are required to practice in the province for two consecutive years and take patients from the Patient Connect NB registry (when applicable).
- Physicians working full time in one of the approved specialties listed below may be eligible to receive a $20,000 location grant.
- Specialists are required to practice in the province for two consecutive years.
- General Surgery/HPB Surgery
- General Internal Medicine
- Geriatric Medicine
- Oncology / Hemato Oncology
- Vascular Surgery
New physicians who have accepted a job offer and agrees to sign a mandatory two year return-of-service to New Brunswick may be eligible to receive a location grant.
Location grants are conditional to the reception of an employment offer from one of the Regional Health Authorities and are subject to approval from the Department of Health. The Regional Health Authorities will submit a request for approval on behalf of the physicians and will have them sign a return-of-service agreement if they meet the eligibility criteria and funds are available.
Location grants may be offered to eligible physicians up to 6 months prior to the physician start date.
Physicians relocating from one region to another are not eligible for a location grant.
Physicians who received a bursary during their residency will not be eligible to receive a location grant.
Physicians who have previously practised in New Brunswick must have moved out-of-province permanently for a minimum of one year before being considered for a location grant.
Physicians are not eligible to receive a location grant or Medical resident bursary more than once during their career even if they have moved out of the province for one year or more or elect to complete another residency training program.
A maximum number of location grants are offered annually based on availability of funds allocated for the program for each fiscal year (April 1 – March 31). Program guidelines are revised annually and may be modify as required without notice to meet current and anticipated physician resource needs.
