There are actions you can take to stay healthy and protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19:

  • Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Wash all surfaces while you sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. Why? Washing your hands removes and kills viruses that may be on your hands.  
  • Practice coughing/sneezing etiquette. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the used tissue immediately. Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.  Why? Your hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses.  Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs. Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus that could contaminate a surface.
  • Public Health is strongly recommending that the public wear non medical masks, also referred to as community face masks, when out in the community when physical distancing is challenging. Why? Wearing a face mask can be a way of covering your mouth and nose to prevent respiratory droplets from contaminating others or landing on surfaces. Wondering what the difference is between physical distancing and self-isolation?

Self-monitor

You should self-monitor if you:

  • have no symptoms and
  • may have been exposed to COVID-19 in the last 14 days or
  • you are in close contact with older adults or people who are medically vulnerable or
  • you have been asked to do so by the local public health authority

Self-monitoring means to:

  • monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19, which could include any of the following:
    • fever above 38°C
    • a new cough or worsening chronic cough
    • sore throat
    • runny nose
    • headache
    • a new onset of fatigue
    • a new onset of muscle pain
    • diarrhea
    • loss of sense of taste or loss of sense of smell
    • in children, purple markings on the fingers or toes
  • avoid crowded places and increase your personal space from others when possible

If you or anyone in your family is experiencing any two of the symptoms, stay home, isolate yourself from others as quickly as possible, call Tele-Care 811 and follow their directions.
  

Self-isolate

You must self-isolate if any of the following apply:

  • you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or are waiting to hear the results of a lab test for COVID-19
  • you have been told by public health that you may have been exposed to COVID-19
  • you have travelled outside New Brunswick in the last 14 days
  • you have two or more symptoms of COVID-19, even if mild:
    • fever above 38°C
    • a new cough or worsening chronic cough
    • sore throat
    • runny nose
    • headache
    • a new onset of fatigue
    • a new onset of muscle pain
    • diarrhea
    • loss of sense of taste or loss of sense of smell
    • in children, purple markings on the fingers or toes

Self-isolation means to:

  • stay at home
  • monitor yourself for symptoms for 14 days
  • avoid contact with others
  • follow local public health authority advice

If there are others in your home, this means to:

  • stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom if possible
  • keep at least two metres between yourself and other people
  • keep interactions brief and wear a mask
  • do not share personal items, such as toothbrushes, towels, bed linen, utensils or electronic devices
  • at least once daily, clean and disinfect surfaces that you touch often, like toilets, bedside tables, doorknobs, phones and television remotes
  • avoid contact with individuals with chronic conditions, compromised immune systems and older adults
  • avoid contact with pets if you live with other people that may also be touching them

If you develop symptoms isolate yourself from others as quickly as possible. Call Tele-Care 811 and follow their directions.
